"If you're always on the hunt for substantial chamber works to round out recitals, Daniel Dorff's Perfect Storm might be the perfect new addition. Commissioned by Duo Flautas Frescas, it is a high-energy frolic for flute, piccolo, and piano. It is rhythmically approachable, yet still includes metric shifts and contrasts. It has all of Dorff's usual harmonic energy and experimentation but is still tonal enough that it can be appreciated by diverse audiences. Storm has a great mix of unison rhythms and melodic independence for the flute/piccolo that make it appropriate for performers of all levels. Dorff's clever alternation between melodic lines in thirds and soloistic passages allows plenty of opportunity to explore intonation, blend, and tone colors on both instruments. The second movement begins with some beautiful contrasts between low register piccolo and flute and offers both players a moment to shine. Dorff's references to traditional forms like the toccata, sarabande, and rondo also make a teacher happy."
