PROGRAM NOTES
CONCERT ETUDE NO. 1 was composed for the Summer 2026 issue of The Clarinet magazine. Its thematic motives are taken from the first movement of Concerto No. 2. My fun challenge in writing the etude was choosing phrases from a long concerto movement, originally composed as the soloist’s dialogue with a busy orchestral accompaniment, then creating a three-minute unaccompanied solo, sounding organic and coherent, and then letting the music evolve further from that starting point.

I hope the fun challenge for performers will be nailing the rhythm and feel. While CONCERT ETUDE NO. 1 looks relatively straightforward at first glance, driving through its irregular syncopations while always pushing forward can be deceptively tricky and the key to an exhilarating performance.
