PROGRAM NOTES
At some point in 1979 while in graduate school, someone (a high school friend?), sent me a postcard with an Arshile Gorky painting on the color side, and a translated Gorky poem or epigram on the non-art side. I liked the words and set them as a short song. I still like the beauty of this song, and for some reason the first two bars of the vocal line appear as an interlude in August Idyll, composed many years later.
